Nestled on the outskirts of Tezpur city in Assam, the Bhairabi Temple is a revered spiritual destination believed to have been built around 400 years ago. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Sri Maa Bhairabi, regarded as a fierce and powerful incarnation of Goddess Durga Devi. Over the centuries, the temple has grown in prominence and is today considered one of the most important Shakti Peethas in Assam.

The Bhairabi Temple is located at Bhairabi Devalaya, immediately across from the Kolia Bhomora Setu, a bridge across the huge Brahmaputra River. It is located at the confluence of the Brahmaputra and Bharali rivers, providing a peaceful and spiritual environment for both devotees and visitors. The breathtaking backdrop of the Bamuni Hills adds to the temple's picturesque allure, making it more than just a place of worship but also a peaceful retreat surrounded by natural beauty.

A unique and captivating feature of the temple complex is a stone carving believed to date back to the 9th century AD. This intricate artwork stands as a testament to the region’s ancient sculptural tradition and serves as a visual highlight for history and art enthusiasts. The temple is under the stewardship of the Borthakur family, namely Dilip Borthakur, Barenya Ranjan Borthakur, and Aditya Prakash Borthakur, who have long played a key role in maintaining the temple's religious and cultural legacy.

Animal sacrifices are part of the ritual traditions at Bhairabi Temple, which are strongly established in the local belief system. Devotees frequently present goats, ducks, and pigeons to the goddess as a sign of devotion and to seek her favors. While some may find this practice problematic, it reflects a centuries-old cultural and spiritual expression that is common throughout northeastern India.

The temple is most colorful during Durga Puja, when hundreds of devotees congregate to celebrate the holiday with zeal. The temple grounds are filled with complex rituals, music, chants, and community meetings. During this time, not only locals but also tourists and pilgrims from all across Assam and bordering states come to see the festivities and receive Maa Bhairabi's heavenly blessings.

Whether for its spiritual aura, scenic location, or historical significance, the Bhairabi Temple stands as a cherished landmark in Assam’s cultural landscape. For those visiting Tezpur, a trip to this ancient temple offers a meaningful glimpse into the region's religious traditions and natural charm.
