Majuli is a river island in the Brahmaputra River in Assam. It is the largest inhabited river island in the world. It was also the first island to be made a district in India. The island is formed by the River Brahmaputra in the south and the River Subansiri in the north. It is a lesser-known tourist destination in the country with a vibrant landscape and culture.
Majuli offers a range of fascinating places that showcase its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Key attractions include the ancient satras such as Kamalabari Satra, Auniati Satra, Dakhinpat Satra, and Samaguri Satra, each reflecting the island’s deep-rooted Vaishnavite traditions, with Samaguri particularly famous for its traditional mask-making. Garmur Satra is another important spiritual site with cultural events and historical relevance. Nature lovers can unwind at Tengapania, a peaceful riverside spot, or explore the island’s lush bamboo groves, expansive paddy fields, and birdwatching sites that attract migratory birds in winter. Kamalabari and Jengraimukh markets offer vibrant displays of Majuli’s handicrafts, handloom textiles, and local cuisine. Tourists can also enjoy boat rides on the Brahmaputra, cycling through scenic villages, and watching traditional Bhaona performances, making Majuli a unique destination that blends spirituality, nature, and living culture.
The best time to visit the island is in November, when Lord Krishna celebrates his Raas Festival. Majuli's weather is ideal during the winter season (October to February), with temperatures decreasing to roughly 15 degrees Celsius. Summer (March to June) is extremely hot and humid, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Monsoon season is also an excellent time to visit the island because the environment is fresh and the weather is comfortable, with temperatures holding around 20 degrees Celsius.
