If you’re visiting Guwahati or even living in the city, one experience that should definitely make it to your must-do list is the ropeway ride over the Brahmaputra River. Offering a rare aerial view of Guwahati, this 20-minute journey is not just a means of transport.

It’s a scenic experience that showcases the natural and urban beauty of the region from a completely different perspective. The ropeway connects Kachari Ghat, located near the heart of the city, to North Guwahati on the other side of the river and covers a stretch of approximately 1.8 kilometers. Notably, it’s one of the longest river ropeways in India, making it a unique attraction in itself.
As the cabin ascends and begins to float gently over the vast Brahmaputra, passengers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views. The Guwahati skyline spreads out in the distance, with renowned landmarks gradually presenting themselves as the river flows gently below. One of the most spectacular sites on the voyage is Umananda Island, the world's smallest inhabited river island and home to the old Umananda Temple. When viewed from above, the island appears almost like a serene painting, surrounded by the Brahmaputra's rushing waters and framed by distant hills.
The ropeway cabins are modern, sheltered, and well-maintained, providing a safe and enjoyable journey. Whether you're traveling alone, in a partnership, or with family and friends, the trip provides a relaxing, hassle-free way to see the city from a different perspective. Large glass windows ensure that you don't miss a single second of the gorgeous voyage, and the slow, steady pace gives you plenty of opportunity to take photos, admire the view, or simply enjoy the experience.
But the ropeway is more than just a beautiful ride it also connects two culturally and historically rich parts of the city. Once you reach North Guwahati, you can explore its quiet lanes, ancient temples, and peaceful ghats. The area retains an old-world charm that contrasts beautifully with the bustling city across the river, offering an ideal opportunity for exploration, reflection, or simply unwinding by the riverside.
